Yesterday in Art History

1650 – Birth of Richard Brakenburgh or Brakenburg

Born 22 May 1650, in Haarlem was a Dutch Golden Age painter. According to Arnold Houbraken he was a poet from Haarlem. He was the pupil of Hendrik Mommers. Though some said he was the pupil of Bernard Schendel, they were the same age and painted in similar styles.

1844 – Birth of Mary Stevenson Cassatt

Born May 22, 1844 was an American artist known for her paintings and prints, celebrated especially for her focus on women’s lives. Though born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, she spent most of her adult life in France, where she became closely associated with the Impressionist movement and formed a lasting friendship with Edgar Degas.

Cassatt’s work often explored the everyday world of women — from quiet domestic moments to tender scenes between mothers and children. Her ability to capture emotional intimacy made her one of the standout voices of her time.

Art critic Gustave Geffroy named her one of the “three great ladies” of Impressionism, alongside Berthe Morisot and Marie Bracquemond. In 1879, critic Diego Martelli even likened her to Degas for their shared interest in movement, light, and bold composition.

Beyond her own art, Cassatt played a key role in promoting Impressionism in the United States, especially through her connection with American collectors like the Havemeyer family.

1859 – Birth of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Born on May 22, 1859, in Edinburgh, Scotland, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, while best known for creating Sherlock Holmes, was also an art enthusiast and collector, often incorporating artistic themes into his writings.
